The role of holiday styles in shaping the carbon footprint of leisure travel within the European Union

Leisure travel within the European Union (EU) contributes significantly to carbon footprint of global tourism. Distance travelled is a main factor in this impact, but some its determinants remain unexplored. We examined role tourists' holiday preferences shaping leisure EU by calculating demand and impact indicators associated with eight styles. find substantial equivalent for visiting relatives, nature tourism sea, sun sand tourism, higher intensity per trip latter. This due widespread sun, despite concentration destinations Southern Europe. Furthermore, international on average three times more intensive than domestic travel. Our insights suggest that tourists’ can be leveraged sustainable development EU.
